Tri-M: Modern Music Masters

The music wing is a second home for a lot of high school pupils. It is a location for performance, practice, and dedication. Nevertheless, there is a small group of student musicians who are members of the Tri-M Music Honor Society who do more than simply play notes on a sheet. Tri-M, a program of the National Association for Music Education (NAfME), offers a platform for leadership and service while honoring students for their academic and musical accomplishments.

The name "Tri-M" is short for Modern Music Masters. The society isn’t just about being the best soloist in the room. To be inducted, students must meet high standards in their music classes and maintain a strong overall GPA. It is designed to highlight students who balance the discipline of music with the rigors of high school academics.

Service is Tri-M's primary goal. Members perform to improve their communities, not just for grades. A typical chapter might have open mic evenings to make everyone's school day happier, organize charity concerts to collect money for neighborhood food banks, or offer peer mentoring to assist younger middle school students in mastering their instruments.

“For a 10th or 11th grader to be in Tri-M, it’s a big deal.” It looks good on your college application because it shows you are a well-rounded person. But more importantly, it creates a musical family at school. It brings together band, choir and orchestra students who wouldn’t normally work together, creating a sense of unity between the ensembles.
