October is universally recognized as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a period of time dedicated to spreading awareness and showing support for those affected by the disease.

Breast cancer is responsible for 1-in-3 new cancer diagnoses in women and is the 2nd leading cause of death for them each year. New tests and treatments have emerged and advanced in recent years, but it is still difficult to diagnose in younger women or without the proper equipment. Spreading awareness and educating the public is the best way to fight it.

This movement took off in 1985, a national campaign was launched to emphasize the importance of spreading awareness of the issue. The pink ribbon became and still is a symbol of strength and hope for those who survived or are still battling the disease.

Ever since, the color pink is worn especially during the month of October to honor those lost and celebrate survivors, motivating ongoing conversations about prevention and care.

We encourage you to aid the cause in whatever way you can! Take the time to research ways you can support your community - whether it be donating, volunteering, joining the club here at NHS, or even just as simple as wearing pink.
