Why is Thanksgiving a holiday?

The first ever thanksgiving was November 1621, it was first established as a holiday on Thursday, November 26, 1789, the holiday where we thank everything we have in life. We celebrate the harvest and other blessings of the past year. After the Pilgrims' first corn harvest proved successful, Governor William Bradford organized a celebratory feast and invited a group of the fledgling colony's Native American allies, including the Wampanoag chief Massasoit. Wampanoag, one of many Nations of people all over North America who were here long before any Europeans arrived, and have survived until today. Squanto, was a member of the Patuxet tribe best known for being an early liaison between the Native American population in Southern New England and the Mayflower Pilgrims who made their settlement at the site of Tisquantum's former summer village. He taught the colonists to bury dead fish in the soil for fertilizer. He also helped the Pilgrims communicate with the Native Americans. He taught them how to plant corn. He taught them how to catch fish. He taught them where to find nuts and berries.During the Pilgrims first winter, they were suffering from scurvy and pneumonia caused by a lack of shelter in the cold, wet weather. Although the Pilgrims were not starving, their sea-diet was very high in salt, which weakened their bodies on the long journey and during that first winter. The winter grew colder and more bitter. There were many days so stormy no work could be done on the houses. Food was scarce, and every day some of the men tramped through the deep snow in search of game. Often they returned nearly frozen, and with empty game bags.
