Ways to Destress in Winter

As the weather gets chillier and the days get shorter, it’s often hard to destress during the winter season. Winter is also notoriously the time of year when school work steps up, and upperclassmen may be thinking and be getting stressed about college. Whatever there may be, stressors are extremely prevalent in high schooler’s lives, and it's important to spend time to relax and take time for oneself. To aid with stressors during the year, I have compiled a list of ways to destress during the winter season. Hopefully these can help you.

1. Spend time with people you love

When caught up in schoolwork and other stress factors, it's important to spend time with people you know will have your back, such as your friends and family. Tell them how you are feeling, and you can help one another with your problems. Communication and time spent with other people will help your mood and improve overall focus.

2. Break it down

When faced with large amounts of stressful things, break them down into smaller steps. Start with something you know you can manage, then work your way up to the bigger tasks. Tackle problems head on and try not to procrastinate, you'll only feel worse afterwards. Make a list, and try to not get overwhelmed.

3. Sleep!

Sleep is such a crucial part of destressing. When you sleep better, you think better. Try going to bed a little earlier each night, and you will notice a difference. If you struggle with falling asleep, avoid screens before bed and dim the lights an hour before bed. Reading before bed can also help.

4. Pet time

When things get hectic, a furry friend can help. Spending time with one’s pet can immediately cheer you up and make things seem a little easier. If you don't have a pet, you can go to a friend’s house who does, or an animal shelter. Spending time with animals is significantly positive for your mental health.

5. Get outside!

Nature is perhaps the best destresser around. If you are feeling overwhelmed, just bundle up and go outside. It might be cold, but it will help you clear your mind so you are ready to focus on the task ahead. Even a short walk can do wonders for your mental health.
