The Season of Love: How Norwell High School Celebrates Valentine’s Day
Love is in the air at Norwell High School as Valentine’s Day quickly approaches on Wednesday, February 14. The holiday—originally celebrated to honor Saint Valentine—represents love and devotion; people have continued to celebrate these values on February 14th every year for centuries. Giving a chance for students to display their own love and devotion for friends and partners, students spent the week of February 5th selling flowergrams. During lunch, students set up a table and gave their peers the opportunity to purchase a flower for someone. These flowers will get sent to the chosen recipient’s homeroom on the morning of Valentine's Day—a fun way to say “I love you”. Whether platonic or romantic, the flower grams are a fantastic gift to celebrate love and relationships. The school has tried both flowergrams and candy grams in the past, but students seem to prefer the roses over the chocolate bars. Another fun aspect of the flower grams is that the sender can add a message—an inside joke, a “love you so much”, or a wholesome quote. The sender can also remain anonymous; they could sign their note “secret admirer” in classic Valentine’s Day mystery movie fashion! Valentine’s Day is always an enjoyable day at Norwell High School, filled with flowers, people decked out in pinks and reds, and the occasional homemade card. Valentine’s Day may not be a day off from school or a huge deal in many people’s minds, but to the students and staff of Norwell High School, the holiday is an important day to celebrate relationships and love.
