The Norwell High School Sailing Team
The Norwell High School sailing team is a combined team with Notre Dame Academy in Hingham. The team sailed at Hull Yacht Club everyday after school from 3:15-5:15pm. There were many new sailors to the team this year and the veterans were very welcoming to the new team members and have helped the new sailors learn the basics and keep a positive attitude. There are two people who get put in a boat together, the skipper and the crew. The skipper drives the boat and controls the main sheet, which is used to power the boat. The crew helps balance the boat and controls the jib, which is a smaller sail at the front of the boat to help maintain the speed of the boat. Throughout the season the team had four races. They raced against Hingham, Scituate, Hull/Cohasset, and Duxbury. Unfortunately, the team lost all of their races, but had great teamwork throughout the races, and everyone was learning along the way. There were four seniors on the team this year, Jack Gordon (NHS), Kim Nguyen (NDA), Emma Parker (NDA), and Maggie Foreger (NHS). The coach, Julie Gordon, a special ed. teacher here at NHS, made posters for all the seniors and had everyone on the team write send off notes on the back. She held a senior recognition night and presented the seniors with the posters as a goodbye and thank you for all their hard work throughout the years. Although the season was short, the team had lots of fun and can’t wait to build on our experiences from this year.
