The drama department has chosen its fall show…
The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee is a musical comedy written in 2005. The show was on Broadway for three years, leaving in 2008. The show follows a spelling bee filled with a cast of bizarre to borderline abused characters. From the home-schooled Leaf Coneybear, who makes his own clothes and is apparently possessed with psychological powers, to the overworked and underappreciated Marcy Park, who is able to speak six languages at the age of 10. Alongside these children are the overexcited Rona Lisa Peretti to the entirely disinterested Douglas Panch. The show has already been cast and rehearsals have started, and is planned to present on November 18th, 19th, and 20th. The musical is a mix of hilarious moments and incredibly soft and serious scenes where each character must confront their own flaws and find themselves, even if that means eliminating themselves from the competition. The show is a great representation of growth in characters and flows from comedy to drama seamlessly, keeping you fully invested as characters develop themselves and come out better on the other side. The show is being directed by Mr. Chris Lacy, a former teacher here at Norwell High School, and is being choreographed and musically guided by Mrs. Kathy Medairos, one of our music teachers. Practice is kicking into full gear as students are racing against the clock to get the show ready for performances in about a month. We hope to see many people attend the show to support our drama department and the student actors. Tickets will likely be available at the door for $10, as in years past.
