Thank You Peer-Eds!

As we welcome term 3 in, the peer educators have been hard at work with homerooms and the elementary schools. On Monday January 30, the peer educators took a trip to the elementary schools to give a lesson on media awareness to the fourth and fifth graders. Always excited and eager to learn about what they have to teach them, the students are always so polite and sweet to their peer educators. In the media awareness lesson, the students were taught about what media is, like social media, newspapers, radios, ect. and how to be aware of how the media can take advantage of you. For instance, the idea of product placement was brought up because in many of the shows that kids, and people in general, watch, there tends to be product placement by companies to help promote their brand. The students were also taught about how advertisements promote brands to encourage watchers to consume their products. Many of the advertisements that students see on social media tend to be exaggerated. They might say that a certain product could change their life or be the most beneficial thing in the world but ends up being not as good as it was talked up to be and in most cases unhealthy for the body. The students were very engaged in the presentation and were sad to know that this was the last visit the peer educators would make to the elementary schools this year. Not only has this created a learning experience for the students but also for the peer educators who get to learn how to deal with little kids and take control of a classroom in a calm manner. Visiting the elementary schools is such a great experience and even the peer educators are sad to know that it is over just for this year.
