Pros and cons of writing in a journal

Have you ever written in a journal? You probably have. Maybe one or two entries, or maybe it was part of a school assignment, but have you ever finished a journal? Not the pretty kind with fancy lettering and washi tape but the kind you write in everyday in your normal handwriting. The kind that outlives a pen or two and contains a chunk of your life. Well if you haven’t, it’s worth considering. But journaling is not for everyone so I will outline the pros and cons for you. The first con is that it makes the most sense to journal at the end of the day and it is likely that you will just want to go to sleep. So maybe if you are already struggling to get enough sleep, don’t journal. The second con is that sometimes your handwriting might be so messy that you cant read it later and that would defeat the purpose of journaling. The last con is that if you wrote anything private it could be read, but this could be avoided by not writing anything private. On the other hand, a pro is that you can look back on a filled journal that encompass a year or so of your life. You can read what you did, what you cared about, all of your goals, wishes and thoughts. You can read them and remember so many things you never would have remembered. For me its like I get transported back to that time. The second pro is that journaling is a great way to think out anything on your mind. It forces you to turn your thoughts into words and that is a great way to understand it. Overall, I would recommend writing a journal, but it does take persistent effort. Just remember don’t only write about mundane things in your journal because that’s boring, write your ideas and thoughts because if those entertain you enough to think about them now you will likely find them interesting in the future.
