NHSGVS 2022: Is It Harder to Fight for a State Title or Defend It?
This year NHSGVS is put under the spotlight, with every opposing team out to beat the defending state champions. Because of this challenge, it is important for the team to stick together and support each other in order to be successful. With a roster of 30 girls, more than half of them being seniors, each person contributes their own energy and leadership style to the team. The sport requires a tight-knit group that can predict their teammates moves even before receiving the ball. Every year the chemistry is different, but a constant is the level of support, respect, and positive energy that is present on every Norwell Girls Varsity soccer team. The bonds made on the team last not only for the season, but far beyond that. A good example of this is when the former NHSGVS player, Giulianna Gianino, who now plays at BU, had a nail biting game against the rival Boston team, Harvard. The 2022 team went to support G at her game on a rainy afternoon because the support does not end even after players graduate. The loud cheers and positive vibes at the college game might have been a contributing factor to BU’s incredible win against the rival school. Either way, the support was appreciated by not just G, but her entire team. Specific bonding activities for this year's team led to undeniable chemistry only after a few weeks of playing together. The team could quickly adjust to each other's playing styles, and with 11 games under the belt, only one loss has been attained. NHSGVS still has a long season ahead, but at this pace, defending the state championship title is looking solid and promising.
