Math Team
The Norwell High School Math Team recently showcased their talent in the Southeastern Massachusetts Mathematics League, competing against rival schools such as Cohasset, Hingham, Notre Dame Academy, Scituate, and Weymouth. Each team participates in a challenging series of four division meets, playoffs, and the chance of reaching state level competition determined by their performance.
Preparation for each meet begins a month in advance, allowing the team to dive deep into the topics. The students of Norwell sharpen their skills during regular practice sessions held every Thursday from 2:30 to 3:20 pm, complemented by additional Wednesday late nights. League meets occur on the first Thursday of each month from November through February, leading up to the intense playoffs scheduled for March. During these meets, students engage in six rounds encompassing various mathematical topics, including arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and more. The competition format involves ten students representing each school, forming two teams to battle it out against other schools.
The recent meet held at Notre Dame Academy on November 2nd saw Norwell obtaining a respectable 4th position out of 5 participating teams. What’s notable is the amazing performance of three Norwell students at the meet. Among these high achievers were two new freshmen, both shining bright as top scorers, displaying their dedication and talent in the realm of mathematics.
Now that they have accomplished this, the Math Team at Norwell is now gearing up for their
next meet. Their dedication to the next meets and their excitement for them demonstrate their goal to further prove their superiority in their league. The team’s outstanding performance in the most recent meet shows their potential and dedication to winning. The Norwell Math Team seems confident in their ability to improve and make a name for themselves in the very competitive Southeastern Massachusetts Mathematics League as they aim to win the next few meets.
