Fall Chorus Concert
This year, the Fall Chorus Concert was held on October 18, 2022. Ms. Medairos, the chorus teacher, along with teaching many other classes, put together an amazing concert! Compared to last year, this year's chorus is much bigger in size resulting in a more intricate concert, with more vocalized parts and allowing each part to be better heard as well. The chorus performed a total of four songs. Kicking off the concert with a very welcoming song called Yonder Come Day, by Bessie Jones. This song was based on an African American Spiritual that comes from the Georgia Sea Islands and was traditionally sung to welcome in the new year, but Ms. Medairos chose this song to honor the new school year. The second song that was sung was called old Abram Brown, by Benjamin Britton. This song has a grand total of only twenty-four words, and is a cannon, which means that it is sung in a round. Originally part of a larger series of twelve songs, Britton wrote this series for a school in Wales. The third song performed was called Lineage. A contemporary song, which uses text from Maragret Walker’s poem of the same name, is about our heritage. It recognizes the grandmothers that came before us and how they worked harder than we ever will be able to. The final, and in my opinion, the most moving song that was performed, was called Amani Utupe, by Patsy Ford Simms. It uses the English language and also Swahili language and is meant to be joyful and uplifting. This song conveys the message that no matter what, we can always get through hard things in life with peace and courage. It is a beautiful reminder that many people are not handed things in life and that not everything is mutually exclusive. Overall the fall concert was a very huge success! The chorus class, and I’m sure all of her other classes too, are very thankful to have Ms. Medairos as our chorus teacher. She is inviting and welcoming and when you walk into her room you feel a sigh of relief. If you were not able to make it to our fall concert be sure to make it to our winter concert with many new, and fun songs to come!
