Mark Mero
Last Thursday, NHS got to host a professional wrestler, Mark Mero and learn about his challenging life story. After the event, each homeroom talked about the presentation and what they thought about it. The freshmen seemed to have a general consensus about the presentation. Most freshmen loved the presentation and how Mark kept the audience’s attention throughout it. Freshmen thought it was a great way to show how bad decisions can negatively affect someone’s life and to learn from Mark’s decisions, so we can make better ones. Also, the freshmen thought it was a positive reminder to cherish your family, friends and the people you have in your life while they’re still here. Many freshmen were touched by Mark’s story about losing his siblings, mother and father and how sad and unfortunate it was. The presentation really put a good perspective on what truly matters in life: family, friends and happiness. Additionally, Mark brought up the good point that those who one surrounds themselves with has a huge impact on oneself. This point made freshmen rethink their relationships and who they’re surrounded by. Furthermore, Mark talked about setting goals and how certain methods can help accomplish those goals. In this case, the freshmen liked the idea of writing goals down to motivate them to be more productive in achieving their dreams. Some freshmen also thought that Mark’s story on true happiness put a realistic perspective on materialistic things. Mark’s message was a good one to follow in finding real happiness. Although many freshmen loved the presentation, some thought it had a little bit of “cheesiness” with the effects. All in all, the freshmen really enjoyed Mark Mero’s presentation.

The majority of sophomores that I talked to thoroughly enjoyed the presentation from Mark Mero and had very positive thoughts, and some were even brought to tears! The presentation made everyone understand and appreciate the things we take for granted. The sophomores felt that they were able to learn to write down goals and put them out in the open to remind ourselves what we are working so hard towards. The presentation was entertaining and way more impactful due to Mark’s energy and the videos he showed. I personally thought that the presentation was one of the best I’ve heard, it made me want to pursue my goals even more than I had before and bring me to be the best version of myself.

The majority of the juniors really enjoyed the presentation. Lots of them were moved to tears and said that it made them rethink how they treat the important relationships in their lives. On the other hand, there were quite a few that thought that although his ideas were important, the way Mark presented them was poor. They thought the background music and gestures were a bit over dramatic and cheesy. Overall, though, I think most students could agree that his ideas were inspirational and provoked a lot of positive thinking within the audience.

The seniors had a lot of positive things to say about the speaker last week. Many seniors felt it was nice to have a speaker whose speech was more casual and a story and less of a lecture or lesson. Everyone enjoyed how the lessons were built into the story, and thought that he was one of the best speakers we’ve had so far. He kept the audience entertained and had great stage presence. A lot of seniors didn’t like how dramatic and cheesy it was, but felt that it didn’t mask the message that he was trying to get through. Overall, a lot of the seniors enjoyed how genuine Mark and his story were and also liked that the presentation was different from the lecturing some of the other assemblies are like.
