Boys Basketball Team Takes TD Garden
Sunday, January 6th, the Boy’s Varsity Basketball team went from a small town gym to none other than Boston’s TD Garden as they took on the Rockland Bulldogs at 8 p.m.. Throughout the day, the Garden was packed with fans of eighteen different teams, both girls and boys; games started at 8 in the morning with Norwell in the last spot, scheduled for 8 o’clock that night.
With some game day jitters present, both teams remained scoreless for much of the first quarter. As they both started to get into their groove, there was plenty of playing time for everyone on the Norwell roster. The half ended with Rockland leading 22 to 8. The third quarter also consisted of some well fought basketball, but unfortunately the Clippers were still trailing as they came into the fourth quarter.
However, Norwell was able to destroy Rockland’s thirteen point lead during the final quarter, ending the game with a 45-42 victory. With a tremendous defensive effort and smart play on the offensive end, the Clippers made it a suspenseful game in the last minutes. Sean Coffey’s two late quarter 3’s, which were both assisted by Aidan Teahan, and Matt Malone’s and Nick Fantom’s foul shots were the final baskets that clinched Norwell’s win.
It was a positive event in the eyes of the Clipper fans, as many students were featured on the Jumbotron, and an even better opportunity for the boys. After seeing Rockland’s form of play in the first half, the boys had to refocus and adjust, two crucial skills a basketball team must have to have a successful season. Although this win did not count towards Norwell’s standings, it helped boost the morale of the team and gave the boys important clinch time experience that could help them later in the season.
