Holiday Fun Fest 2018

Last week on Friday night the Norwell Volunteer Corps put on the Holiday Fun Fest for children ages three through ten. This event has been held each year for the past five years. This year we raised $3,345 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation of MA & RI, making our grand total over the last five years $10,889. I have gone every year since I was a Freshman and each year it gets better. The week leading up to the event, a table with baskets of gifts and gift cards is put out for all the students and faculty at the school to purchase raffle tickets. Then, the night of the event students from Volunteer Corps decorate the cafeteria with holiday-themed decorations and stations with activities for the children to do. First, the students get to decorate a bag to put their goodies in that they receive from other stations, like candy and ornaments. After that, they get to choose where to go next. There is pizza and cotton candy, Santa comes for the children to take pictures with, and there is a multitude of different stations and games for the kids to do. This year I worked at the Holiday Wish List station where kids get to decorate a Santa Hat wishlist and put all the things they want for the holidays on it. This station is especially fun because you get to interact with the kids and figure out their favorite things (doing a little bit of deciphering of what they are trying to say). There were so many gifts and things that kids were asking for this year that I had never heard of before (amphibious car, hatchimals, everything LOL, oh and also if you didn’t know the Harry Potter fad is back). This event is great for families to give their kids time to play cornhole with friends, make necklaces, write Christmas lists so their parents can figure out what their are secretly wishing for this year. It is a great event to give back to other children and allow the Make A Wish Foundation to grant children with critical illnesses their one wish, almost like a fairy godmother.
