Lexi’s Monthly Musical Review: Waitress
Hello readers! I’m so happy to be back writing reviews again! This February, I got to see the hit musical Waitress at the Boston Opera House, and this month’s review will be about my thoughts on seeing it! Without further adieu, let’s get on with the show!
Plot:
With music from Sara Bareilles, Waitress tells the story of Jenna, a small town waitress stuck in an abusive marriage who enters a pie making contest after finding out she’s pregnant. Along the way, she has an affair with her doctor and she ultimately divorces her husband to have a better life for her and her daughter.
Cast:
Desi Oakley as Jenna
Bryan Fenkart as Dr. Pomatter
Nick Bailey as Earl
Charity Angel Dawson as Becky
Lenne Klingaman as Dawn
Larry Marshall as Joe
Ryan G. Duncan as Cal
Maiesha McQueen as Nurse Norma
Harper Schmid, Meredith Wakefield, Vienna Maas all play Lulu at different performances
Thoughts and Opinions:
I had an amazing time seeing this fantastic show! The cast was absolutely amazing and they all did a wonderful job. I’d like to give kudos to Desi Oakley for her heartwarming and very realistic portrayal of Jenna. Jenna is a role that could too easily fall into the trap of “damsel in distress” and Desi gave Jenna a fighting spirit that makes the character unique. I urge everyone to listen to the soundtrack (especially the songs “She Used to be Mine” and “What Baking Can Do”), it is absolutely wonderful! The show is an absolute delight to see and I highly recommend listening to the soundtrack or going to see it in person!
