President-Elect Trump: The Silver Lining

Donald Trump’s election as president was immediately followed by mixed reactions among all Americans. Donald Trump being elected is hardly anything the country has not seen before. This was simply a “protest” election where many were upset with the establishment and Washington elites. Their hatred towards Washington is not completely nonsensical but electing a total outsider with no foreign policy experience was a very risky decision. To those like my myself who did not support president elect Donald Trump for many reasons, there is still a silver lining to this election. It is simply that we live in a democracy where this is possible. To say many Trump supporters are uneducated white male is not untrue but is vague and embraces ignorance by implying they are all racist and unfit to make a decision. Many of Trump supporters are working class Americans who encourage his plan to emancipate and rid trade deals that have left them without jobs and their communities poverty stricken. This is a totally legitimate reason to support a candidate but it does not necessarily provide stability or accountability.

His divisive rhetoric and unawareness about the states and nature of certain minorities is a completely different topic and for many a reason for concern. Trump’s disdain and great efforts to not fall under the category of a politically correct politician and his bad relations with certain groups is perhaps derived from his lack of experience in public office. He is seemingly unaware of how this divisive rhetoric can create backlash from certain groups because he was only focused on appealing to a certain demographic during the election. A demographic that large supported and agreed with controversial opinions and these people are not necessarily the same group that supported due to his economic policies. He now has to restore relations with communities that he offended for it is incumbent to due as president of the United States. This is something that he needs to, or at least attempt to, change during his time as president. I along with many others are not interested in letting the offensive and potentially harmful going unacknowledged. Seeing reparations in the form of community outreach and involvement would be preferable. This is necessary in my opinion because having a divisive president who legitimizes bigotry and hate can be nothing but hurtful to minority individuals and to society as a whole.
